The Parenting Breakthrough: Real-Life Plan to Teach Kids to Work, Save Money, and Be Truly Independent

The Parenting Breakthrough by Merrilee Browne Boyack

Described as a "Real-Life Plan to Teach Kids to Work, Save Money, and Be Truly Independent," this book has received huge kudos from parents everywhere. Be sure to read the Customer Reviews for this remarkable book. Not only do parents love it, but kids do too!

Growing Up Creative, by Teresa Amabile, Ph.D.

This book is a myth-shattering look at the most important yet misunderstood aspect of a child's development: creativity. Growing Up Creative is filled with dozens of concrete, hands-on exercises that can help parents keep creativity alive. The key is motivation that originates from within the child; an intrinsic combination of work and play. Read more about nurturing creativity in our weblog.

Families Writing (Second Edition)

Families Writing, by Peter Stillman

In this very practical book, the author details why and how to record words that go straight to the heart; the simple, vital words that will speak to those you care most about and to their descendants many years from now. Encourage family writing with a host of writing experiences, some engrossing, some zany; and none requiring "talent." I found many of the writing prompts in this book (first edition) to be perfect for homeschooling projects.

Performance Without Pressure; A Guide for Parents, by Martin L. Seldman

This timely book shows parents how to promote learning skills without subjecting their children to disabling stress. It focuses on the twin goals of achievement and acceptance -helping a child to master skills and tasks while at the same time acquiring a belief in self-worth that is not tied into success or failure in an particular effort. The many easy-to-learn techniques will help parents instill in their children healthy attitudes about achievement and acceptance that will last a lifetime.

In Their Own Way, Thomas Armstrong, Ph.D.

Armstrong is a former learning disabilities specialist who became disenchanted with the concept of disability. His alternative concept of learning differences, or unique learning styles, is modeled on Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences: linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal. Believing that schools have failed to develop children's special abilities, he suggests different ways that parents can help children to learn any subject according to their own style and to develop self-esteem. Read more in our weblog about this book and the subject of multiple intelligences. To me, this is what homeschool is all about: understanding and teaching to our children's individual learning styles. This book will help you do that.

Winter's Tale, by Robert Sabuda

Spectacular! Sparkly whites, shiny silvers, and icy pastel hues, Sabuda's dazzling pop-ups upstage the simple text in a tale that highlights the wonders of a winter landscape. The paper constructions are indicative of the artist's usual high standard: an owl soars off the pages; a cave lifts and opens to show the foxes concealed within; and a waterfall cascades into a rushing river, where a bear darts forward to catch the fish that dance above the water's surface. The final 3-D scene shows all of the creatures posed within a forest of evergreens and bare trees, while a snowman standing in front of a lonely house reveals himself as the story's narrator, and promises to return for a visit next year. Be sure to check out all of Robert Sabuda's Pop-Up Books by scrolling down the page and clicking on the individual titles.

Instead of making horseshoes or baking bread, Javan and Lia would rather be knights in the King’s army. "We’ll be the most famous, bravest knights the king ever had," Lia says. But there are many ways to wear the King’s armor; ways not even Javan and Lia understand until the King reveals a secret that makes the two young villagers the real heroes. Award-winning author Rachel Ann Nunes teams up with talented painter Jay Bryant Ward to tell a medieval allegory with beautiful, lifelike paintings that create magic on every page. This compelling fable of knights and kings, bakers and blacksmiths, is a follow-up to the author’s Daughter of a King, which has sold more than 50,000 copies. Snowflake Bentley, by J. Martin

Most children are captivated by snow, but how many go on to make it their lifework? This beautiful biography, winner of the 1999 Caldecott Medal, tells the true story of a Vermont farm boy who was mesmerized by snowflakes. Wilson Bentley was fascinated by the six-sided frozen phenomena, and once he acquired a microscope with a camera, his childhood preoccupation took on a more scientific leaning. Bentley spent his life taking countless exquisite photographs (many that are still used in nature photography today), examining the tiny crystals and their delicate, mathematical structures. Christmas Oranges, by Linda Bethers

This illustrated gift book for all ages tells the classic story of how a young orphan girl named Rose discovers the spirit of generosity that lies at the heart of the holiday. When Rose is eight years old, an epidemic forces the closing of her beloved Greenwoods Orphanage, and she is shipped to Irongates, an austere, loveless institution run with Dickensian cruelty. Headmaster Crampton punishes Rose severely for a tiny infraction, decreeing that she miss the special treat of an orange on Christmas morning. How the other children circumvent his instructions to safeguard a glorious Christmas for Rose is the sweet message of this story, which is beautifully illustrated by Ben Sowards.

A Christmas Dress for Ellen, retold by T. S. Monson

This is the true story of a young mother whose heart is full of sorrow as she was getting her five small children ready for bed. It was Christmas Eve, 1927 and there was nothing to fill the stockings, and very little food to eat. Mary had written to her sisters for help with such necessities as wheat, yeast, flour, and cornmeal. She had also asked for clothing and some old, used quilts, for all of hers were thin and full of holes, and she had added that her selfless daughter Ellen had only one dress that was faded and patched..." Her letter had gone unanswered, it seemed. Your family will love this classic tale of Christmas sacrifice and service.  A treasure for the whole family.

The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg

One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. And one couldn't ask for a more talented artist and writer to tell the story than Chris Van Allsburg. This magical tale is one of our  family favorites; I personally love the dreamy soft pastel illustrations.
