For Homeschoolers

Arithmetic / Math / Number Logic

"24" Game

This is by far our favorite math game. Each card has four numbers on each side. Players race to be the first to figure out how to make 24 by using all four numbers using adding, subtracting, multiplying, and/or dividing. Difficulty levels are indicated on each card (although some "hard" ones seem easy and visa-versa). This is the perfect game for practicing mental math skills! Ages 8+

Dino Math Tracks Game

Award-winning game reinforces counting, addition, subtraction, and place value skills with a prehistoric twist! Children roll a 4-digit number, then move their dinosaur species to the appropriate ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands places. Math problem-solving cards for various levels of play add to the challenge. Ages 6+

Factor Frenzy Game Factor Frenzy Game

Find out how well you know your multiplication and division tables! Exciting, fast-paced game show action keeps you on your toes as you try to be the first to ring in the correct answer. Three games and two levels of difficulty challenge players' skills. Ages 6+

Aunti Pasta's Fraction Game Aunti Pasta's Fraction Game

It's pizza time! Players first need to sort pizza slices into wholes, halves, thirds, and quarter piles before beginning. This active, hands-on math game requires very little reading, and is a great way to introduce the concepts of pie-chart fractional divisions as well as simpler fractional concepts. Adaptable for preschoolers as well as for older siblings, it's a good choice for homeschoolers or family game night - with pizza for dinner, of course! Ages 4+

General Knowledge / Trivia

Blurt

Blurt!

This is a boisterous word-guessing board game for the whole family. Comes with a huge stack of two sided-cards with word clues. Colorful, simple, and fun! Recommended for ages 10+, but our children played at younger ages. There is a Junior version available too.

Scattergories

One of our favorite trivia-style games is Facts In Five, which is an old parlor game, no longer available (except at garage sales, I suppose).  The most similar game I have found is Scattergories, in which each player takes a category list with 12 categories--such as vegetable, state, presidents, things you throw away--and must write down the name of one item that fits into each category. Sounds easy enough but each item must begin with a specific letter that is determined when the 20-sided die is rolled. Your answer list might be: rutabaga, Rhode Island, Roosevelt, rubbish, etc. You get points for each unique answer only, so don't pick the most obvious words! Lots of fun, great for stretching brains and vocabulary. Recommended for ages 12+ but our children played at much younger ages.

Visual Brainstorms

One hundred cards include visual, logic, math, maze, and other brainteasers. They are color-coded to indicate difficulty. Answers are explained on back, with a bonus question that frequently depends on visual clues you probably didn't pay enough attention to on front of the card. This game (an older version) continues to challenge our family, and we've had it for years! Play alone, with one opponent, or in teams. This version won a 1996 Parent's Choice® Honor.

Great States! Great States Board Game

What is the capital of NJ? Where is the Football Hall of Fame? These are just a few of the hundreds of questions players are asked as they adventure around the USA discovering state attractions and landmarks, capitals, state locations, and more. In order to answer the questions on the cards, players must look closely at the colorful USA map game board, and become familiar with the geography of the country. Ages 7+

Spanish Bingo

The whole family can learn Spanish letters, initial sounds, and basic words with this easy-to-play bingo game. Kids read the letter on the spinner and match it with a Spanish word (on their bingo card) that begins with that letter. Three in a row wins! Includes four-double-sided laminated game cards, one spinner, and 36 markers. for 2-4 players. Ages 4+

Spanish Scrabble

This version of Scrabble is a real find and highly recommended by those who own it or have played it. It assigns different letter values to correspond with Spanish language usage, and is wonderful for Spanish language learners. Best method includes having a good Spanish language dictionary on hand, such as the Spanish Royal Academy Dictionary, and allowing both English and Spanish words. Simply allow regular points for English words and double points for Spanish words (plus any extra points in board squares).

Science

Mars 2020 Board Game

The science board game gives curious minds a lesson in basic astronomy and aerospace technology as players try to be the first one to land on Mars and win the game. To begin, kids choose a spaceship and sign on as their favorite crew member. The mission isn't easy as Mars continually orbits the game board during play. Ages 8+

Spelling / Word Play

Wordplay for Kids

Learning has never been this much fun! Wordplay For Kids allows children to develop many vital skills while playing a truly unique game. All children participate in every round, with a whole new challenge arising every time. The idea is wonderfully simple: players try to form a word  that contains certain letters, which they acquire by using the letter spinner. The longer the word, the more points are earned. Six special categories guide the kids along. Ages 6+

Password

This is my personal favorite word game, from the old game show that I never missed! It's easy to learn and fun to play, but takes time to master. The trick is to figure out the best types of one-word clues to get your partner to guess the secret word first. Synonym? Antonym? Rhyming word? Related word? The strategy is to know your partner and how they will respond to your clue! A great game for both adults and children, the more who play, the merrier. The secret words are hidden on special cards that can only be read from the two plastic wallets. Some words are difficult for children. Just skip them, but also use this game as a vocabulary stretcher. Many versions have come out over the years, all with brand new words. We own maybe four of them.  Ages 8+

Boggle

Boggle

We played this game over and over again. In this classic game, you make as many words as you can from the given letters in 3 minutes, by joining letters up, down, sideways, and diagonally. The longer the words, the higher point value. Boggle is a fun, fast paced family game. There is a Junior version of Boggle, but our youngest players never had any problem playing the original version. Ages 8+

Scrabble

This is the budget version of Scrabble. The game itself is terrific, but you may want to buy a couple of them. Why? Because you'll need at least two sets of Scrabble tiles, all mixed together, to play the most fun word game ever: Take Two! My children made this game up, and everyone who has tried it absolutely loves it! Take a look at our weblog to learn more about Take Two and how to play. You may decide to buy a few extra Scrabble games! Or, mix up your old Scrabble pieces (you won't need the boards), then buy a new game for playing Scrabble!
