Success!

We asked you for success stories. We want to know what works for your homeschool. Has a particular lesson or program been hugely successful? This is your chance to share your positive experiences with other homeschoolers. Here's what happened when the school determined that a child could not learn effectively without one-on-one attention.

Our Blessing, Our Success

By Mika Dajos

I am writing this about the wonderful difference that Time4Learning, an online educational program, has made in my family's life. My son Jeremiah, now 7, was diagnosed shortly after entering school in Arizona. His teacher said that he needed one-on-one education to learn. They also said that they didn't think he was grasping what they taught him; that he functioned at a 3 yr. old level. My husband and I knew this couldn't be true, our son was very bright. Before we took him out of the classroom to educate him at home, his teacher discovered that Jeremiah was indeed bright and able to learn, when she spent time with him one-on-one. He was placed in an online education program using CompassLearning.

He surprised us all, scoring above the requirements for his grade level! When we moved to back to Michigan, we had to find a way to continue with the program. Then we found Time4Learning. Time4Learning uses the updated version of that program. It was very affordable for our low-income family. Jeremiah is not only learning, but retaining what he has learned without pressure.

My son can log-on to the program all by himself. He loves that he can see how many lessons he has completed, re-do a lesson if he needs more help with it, and the fun characters and sounds. I can't tell of the joys that we received from hearing our child ask for more school time! Before he got so frustrated. Now, I have to remind him that his lessons are over, because he wants to stay on past his school time.

Time4Learning also has a timer and playground, which we have used a reward feature. Time4Learning has Teacher Resource Guides and Answer Keys for parents; these have truly been a blessing. We supplement the core curriculum with worksheets, other resources and field trips. Homeschooling has been such a blessing for our family, and we have had such a success that we are going to homeschool our next child as well!

Mika and Jeremiah, thank you for sharing your experiences with us. It is so ironic that schools see the need for one-on-one attention in such a negative light. It's more about budgets, time constraints, and classrooms full of students than what children really need, don't you think? What student would NOT benefit from one-on-one learning? The ability to spend that precious one-on-one time with our children is the most compelling reason of all to teach them at home.
